MAJOR — Use With Caution
🔴 MAJOR — Do NOT drink alcohol with Lorazepam.
Evidence level: STRONG
Alcohol and lorazepam together dangerously suppress breathing and brain function.
Additive CNS and respiratory depression via combined GABA-A agonism.
Avoid all alcohol while taking lorazepam. This combination can be fatal.
Take Lorazepam only as prescribed — benzodiazepines carry dependence risk and should not be adjusted without medical guidance. Alcohol at a separate time. Food slows benzodiazepine absorption (delayed but longer effect). NEVER combine with alcohol. Avoid grapefruit — it increases blood levels of many benzodiazepines.
Elderly, sleep apnea, other sedatives
Extreme drowsiness, slowed breathing, loss of consciousness
Be honest about alcohol use with your prescriber
Combining sedatives increases overdose risk. Discuss with your doctor: magnesium glycinate, L-theanine, or passionflower may provide anxiety relief with fewer interaction risks. Never stop benzodiazepines abruptly — taper under medical supervision.
