MAJOR — Use With Caution
🔴 MAJOR — Do NOT drink alcohol with Alprazolam. Risk of fatal respiratory depression.
Evidence level: STRONG
Alcohol and alprazolam both slow down your brain in the same way. Together, they can dangerously suppress breathing and cause loss of consciousness.
Additive CNS depression. Both enhance GABA-A receptor activity, causing synergistic sedation, respiratory depression, and impaired motor function.
Absolutely avoid alcohol while taking alprazolam. Even one drink can cause dangerous oversedation. This combination is a leading cause of overdose deaths.
Take Alprazolam only as prescribed — benzodiazepines carry dependence risk and should not be adjusted without medical guidance. Alcohol at a separate time. Food slows benzodiazepine absorption (delayed but longer effect). NEVER combine with alcohol. Avoid grapefruit — it increases blood levels of many benzodiazepines.
History of substance use, elderly, sleep apnea, other CNS depressants
Extreme drowsiness, slowed/stopped breathing, loss of consciousness, blue lips
Be honest about alcohol use. Ask about safer anxiety alternatives if you drink.
Combining sedatives increases overdose risk. Discuss with your doctor: magnesium glycinate, L-theanine, or passionflower may provide anxiety relief with fewer interaction risks. Never stop benzodiazepines abruptly — taper under medical supervision.
